them. Little or nothing had surfaced about the man. He was obviously an Airman from Pepperell, or at least assigned somewhere in the command. They knew only that he was somewhere in his early twenties and that was really about all the RCMP forensic team had been able to establish beyond the cause of death. There was no identification, no billfold, nothing. No one at the base had reported anyone missing. They had been able to get fingerprints off of only one hand, and there was even some confusion about them. At the moment, the dead man was a John Doe in the Saint Johns city morgueand nothing more. And unless Peter Machino could uncover a whole lot more than he already knew, that was the way it was likely to remain. |

A great deal more was known about the woman. She was Cynthia Irene Salem, 23 years old, from a small fishing village near Cornerbrook. She was unemployed and had lived at her current address for the last two years. Of particular interest to Machino was the fact that the young woman had no visible means of support. That fact, coupled with her choices in clothing and jewelry, could lead him to only one conclusion, a conclusion he wasn't about to share with the distraught Mrs. Markle. |
